The Jazz Sessions is the 10th album produced by eclectic cellist / composer Ivan Hussey under the artist name Celloman.
With all Cellos recorded by Ivan, the album features 10 original Jazz compositions for cello trio from the cheeky ‘Tango Through’ to the Grappelli-esqe ‘A Touch Tipsy’ and the beautifully melodic ‘Dark Wine’.
Each track features the use of ‘Arpezzato’ cello. A style of playing, without bow that uses finger techniques imported from a wide range of stringed instruments and a variety of styles and genres. Ivan coined the word with his 2019 album ‘Arpezzato Cello’.
Here, the Arpezzato cello acts as the rhythm section providing, in one cello part, the harmony, the bass and the rhythm using techniques such as walking bass, boom chick, arpeggio, slide, hammer-on, pull-offs. On to this bed, bowed melody and counter-melody are added.
