Moods, Broods & Interludes is the new album and project by Ivan Hussey (A.K.A Celloman). The album, a collection of fifteen compositions written for variations of stringed instruments, contains pieces for solo cello, duo of cello & violin, trio of violin, viola & cello, string quartet and a quartet of celli. The music, composed by Ivan Hussey, takes its influence from a variety of musical traditions and moods. From the Carnatic Southern Indian influenced ‘Veena’ to the African highlife of ‘Georgetown’, the flamenco sounding ‘Scenes of you’, to the brooding solo cello piece ‘The Changeling’.

Holy Won hails from the ghetto known as Grants Pen in Kingston Jamaica where he grew up in a wooden-structured low income house surrounded by a life of poverty, despair and extreme violence.

Originally known as Daddy Irie, Holy Won released several records locally in Jamaica before teaming up with an act featuring two one legged men called Father and Son. Holy Won changed his name to ‘The Holy Ghost’ and they became Father, Son and The Holy Ghost. They had great success touring Jamaica with their show featuring music, comedy, theatrics and one-legged karate kicks.

During this time Holy Won recorded a song called ‘Prehistoric Daze’ with the group Shakespeare’s Sister for the Flintstones Movie soundtrack. This song can be found on the groups’ album ‘Long live the Queens!’ (The Platinum Collection). Holy Won also features on a song by the Reggae super group Third World called ‘Times Hard’ from the ‘Live it up’ album.

As a solo artist with the name ‘The Holy Ghost’, Holy Won received raised eyebrows from members of the church establishment. Not willing to risk eternal damnation, he changed his name to his present incarnation of Holy Won. With a new single, a brilliant cover of the Blur hit ‘Song 2’, renamed ‘Song 2 Too’ and a soon to be released solo album, the heavens are the limit for this earthbound musical soldier of adversity.

She began playing piano at the age of four, and studied the instrument under Audrey Cooper at the Jamaica School of Music from 1974 to 1976. In 1978 she left Jamaica for the U.S. to study piano at the University of Florida, and when she returned to Jamaica in 1980, she joined the band Native as a keyboard player. Native also included her husband Peter Couch and lyricist Brian Jobson as members, and Suzanne and Jobson began writing songs together (including “Fortunes of Love,” which appeared on the soundtrack to Stephanie Black’s Life and Debt, a video documentary on Jamaica’s severe economic problems). Couch has been a featured singer on several Jamaican record releases, including the vocal mix of Steely & Clevie’s “Why,” a version of the Carly Simon song that was the centerpiece of their 1990 album Soundboy Clash on Profile Records, and Monty Alexander’s Many Rivers to Cross, recorded in 1995 at Suzanne and Peter’s own Couch Studios in Kingston. Lifeline, her debut album, appeared in 2001 from Cane Juice Music, and the more reggae-influenced In the Rhythm (which she co-produced with Richard Alderson and featured the veteran Jamaican rhythm section of Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare) followed in 2005 from Canyon International.

The album features great Jamaican artists doing covers and interpretations of classic British punk, britpop and Indie tunes.

“I have strong links to Jamaica and Jamaican music and I also have strong connections to England and English music. I have worked extensively with reggae music in Jamaica and I also worked in England with ‘Indie’ music, so for me it was natural to put both music forms together.”

‘Kingston Calling’ made its UK debut on BBC radio One’s Zane Lowe’s show and in Jamaica it has been featured by Ron Muschette on Irie FM and features a host of top Jamaican artists including Anthony B, CeCille, Toots, QQ, Chezidek, as well as introducing some new hotties! With renditions of tunes like London Calling, becoming Kingston Calling, Common People becoming Ghetto People and Song 2 becoming Song 2 Too and Kicking versions of ‘Teenage Kicks’ and ‘Tainted Love’

In live performance, they have wowed audience in UK and europe including: Glastonbury Festival – UK, Exit Festival – Serbia, Sauti Za Busara – Zanzibar, Womad Festival – UK and many others.
The music of Celloman,

“moving between pastoral, ambient moods to smoky middle-eastern pieces” (The Observer),

can be at once soothing, danceable and beautiful with

“Middle Eastern rhythms, urban soul and haunting classical refrains” (Wax Magazine).

It is a music that

“blurs the boundaries between jazz and world and that’s even before you get to the classical inflections”(The Times)

Led by electric cello and vocals, the 6-piece Celloman full band consists of: electric violin, percussion, keyboards, bass & drums with

“cello and violin in oriental harmonies more subtle than found in pure folk music” (The Evening Standard)
